Huércal Overa is the result of the union of two medieval settlements: Huércal and Overa. The town sits between two branches of the Almanzora River. Huércal Overa is a market town with much of the town centre being taken over by the market every Monday morning. The town has very good facilities with a variety of hotels, restaurants, a modern hospital, a municipal swimming pool and leisure centre. Two recommended restaurants are the Ballabona and the Andalusia; both serve good home-made food. Huércal Overa is well served by the motorway network being 1 km away from the main North-South coastal motorway.

Every February 8 a festivity is celebrated in Huercal Overa Named “La noche de los lumbres” in which the ancestors of this town are remembered, who, in the absence of electricity, walked and were illuminated with fires. It is best described as a recognition of humble roots and appreciation for how the community have evolved.

It consists of carrying out a procession with lights and the town in darkness, in addition to which a conference is later held in which the history and curiosities of the ancient times of this town are explained.
